Copyediting

This basic level of editing checks for grammar and spelling, but also any plot holes and awkward writing.

Copyediting checks for:
  • Pacing, voice, inappropriate wording, and wordiness (larger-picture issues not addressed).
  • Grammar and spelling
  • Syntax
  • Style inconsistencies
  • Factual errors
  • Minor formatting issues

This service includes two rounds of copyediting, including one after the author has made any revisions.

Price: $6 for a page (not to exceed 250 words a page). For a manuscript of about 70,000 words, this comes out to $1,680.

Developmental Editing

Don't submit or publish your manuscript without a thorough editing job. This is an in-depth look at all aspects of your manuscript: characters, point of view, tone, pacing, plotting, backstory, dialogue, and the overall structure of the book.

Developmental editing includes a detailed manuscript critique and more notes and comments within the manuscript.

It does not include copyediting.

Price: Fees for this range from $3.50 (just a critique) to $9 a page (not to exceed 250 words a page), depending on the writer's needs. A price estimate will be given upon evaluation of the manuscript.

The Full Package

The full package includes:
  • A detailed manuscript critique (five to ten pages).
  • More notes and comments within the manuscript itself, with line editing that looks at language use at the sentence and paragraph level. The aim is to improve pacing and narrative tension.
  • A round of copyediting after any revisions by the author.
  • A half-hour call, or unlimited emails, with follow-up questions.

Price: Fees for this range from $10 to $12 a page (not to exceed 250 words a page), depending on the writer's needs. A price estimate will be given upon evaluation of the manuscript.
Additional Notes

Nonfiction prices may be different than fiction, depending on the type of work needed.

Any project begins with a consultation with the client. Since not all projects are the same, a discussion about the level of editing will help set the fee. I also require at least a sample chapter of the manuscript in order to determine the fee and time commitment. Clients will receive a letter of agreement; this allows the client to halt a project with three days' written notice.

Clients will be required to provide a deposit. Payment is generally expected in installments throughout the project. Payment is accepted through PayPal. All work is kept in the strictest confidence.

My schedule tends to fill up quickly, so please contact me early to ensure a slot on my schedule.
